The theme that I have chosen is edges. I chose edges because when I was looking through pictures of the different themes to chose from, I was more drawn to the Edges theme more then any of the other themes. I also thought it might have been quite simple and easy as well as it being eye catching. When I came across edges I thought it would be mainly me taking pictures of edges of tables, buildings, doors etc. But when researching I came across all different types of edges from an artist called Giorgio Morandi, I really liked his paintings, I thought it might be a good idea to try out what he does but with photographs instead of painting. I mostly focused on things like light. Light from the sky or light from the studio lights which reflect onto glass jars, bottles, cups and mugs, all different kinds of thing that catch reflection. You have to think about the different sizes of the cups and all colours and shapes, lengths etc. The viewpoint from what you can see through a camera is completely different, It seems more like real life through a camera because everything is more clear and colours are much more clear to see especially when using photo shop or any other type of editing.
I have carried out other experiments with plates, cutlery, wine glasses and had props like food, and flowers - This is inspiration from Laura Latynski. I have used a range of different materials and resources which have stood out and looks quite real in a way, I chose a couple of pictures which I liked the best and edited them on photoshop. I have screenshots on my website of how I have edited them.
I then took a series of random pictures of cups and flowers which I didn't take for inspiration but just as an experiment to test out different kinds of shading, lighting and colours. They turned out quite beautiful especially with how I have photoshopped them too.
When taking the pictures I mostly used my mobile phone camera or a cannon 300. I did prefer using my phone camera because it focuses just like a camera, It's also easier to use in regards of taking pictures and putting them onto my website. You can't really tell the difference to what I've taken on a camera and on my phone. I have used no camera apps or any type of apps on my phone - Other then the normal camera which is already on my phone, I only had edited pictures on photoshop. During the 10 hours I also made time to work in the darkroom to do some photograms. I used the objects from the pictures, so things like cutlery and cups. Some went well and some went a bit wrong, I also used a tissue method - Where you place the tissue in the chemicals and place it over the photographic paper to give it this rippled kind of effect, I mostly just did it because I thought it looked quite cool but it made the picture look quite fun I would say...
At the top of my unit 2 page I have a plan section. When I have ideas about what to add onto my website I would record it down so that I wouldn't forget, my page is laid out in sections; It started off with research of artists, explaining why I like them and why they inspire me. I then started experimenting by taking pictures of edges, inspired by different artists, photographed them and put them on my website. I edited them and screenshot how I have edited the pictures on photoshop.
For my final piece I have enlarged a picture of iced fruit and vegetables In inspiration of Irving Penn, They look really beautiful with the bright colours with the white background, I printed 3 pictures out A3 of the frozen vegetables. I also enlarged 3 different pictures of cigarettes and one LARGE picture of 3 smoked cigarette budds. They look amazing esperically with the effect on the LARGE one,
It's black and white, It this really depth to it and It seems quite interesting, This idea Is also from Irving Penn aswell, I would say he's someone I'm mostly interested In as an artist, hes very inspiring and I really like this thoughts and ideas. In furture projects In sixthform or Uni I am definitily going to go In depth with his work and try out different kinds of experimenting with his ideas.
When starting this project I had no confidence in what I was going to do for my final peice, After a while when my teacher had helped me out and gave me books to look at, to think about what to do and It really helped me think about what I need to do. I am very happy with what my final pieces came out like; They are so different to any other thing that I have worked on, I would say towards knowing what I am doing and being on task I became very confident.
I am very happy with my Unit two and my previous Units aswell as.
Yasmin Cornwell.
