Light painting
The word photography translates as drawing (or writing) with light: photo = from the Greek phos meaning light graph = from the Greek graphe meaning writing Light painting is a photographic technique usual performed in the dark or at night. So that the light which is used from the torch light shines clearly through the single long exposure photograph; which takes about 15seconds or less. depending on how long you would like the light to go on for.
At first you have to use a big bright flash light which takes a still photo of you and then drags on in the dark which is where you use your torch which is called ''Light Painting. |
Examples of my light paintings.
Me and my partners went into a dark room with just a camera, a flash light and a light lazar. We used loads of different colours; white, red, green and pink. Some turned out rather well some didn't, to improve on things I would of used a longer time . |
Before and after.
Before. This is before I edited the photo on Iphone
As you can see its quite contrasted and very bright, the Pink lazar light is quite faded and isn't very clear, the background looks a bit of an off grey colour wheres its meant to be black, i would say this image is very over effected and needs to be toned down slightly, |
AFTER.This is my after image which I had edited on Iphone. I prefer this to my first image before I had edited it. The contrast isn't as bright, the colours are shown very clearly compared to the 1st image and it doesn't look edited it just looks like its been taken normally.
|
Before. This is before I edited my photo, as you can see nothing has changed, all the settings haven't been moved or changed, not all had been edited as some things may say (-3/-2/-0.09) that's because its just added the colour and exposure which is on the picture.
|
after. This is after my edit, and you can see i've turned the exposure down a bit because the exposure was too bright. I turned the definitions up about and also the shadows. The shadow gives it more life and darkness to it, which is what we want because the photo is to bright. I turned up the temperature and the tint, the tint has just given the pink a brighter effect, making it noticeable.

What i did?
The DSLR camera was attached to a tripod so that it would be totally still during the long exposures. I put the camera in Manual Mode and selected various shutter speeds ranging from 10 to 30 seconds. I experimented with different aperture and ISO settings based on each exposure. Working in partnership with others I experimented with several techniques:
- writing and drawing recognisable shapes e.g. words/arrows during a long exposure
- combining a short flash burst of light with the addition of light drawing so that the subject and the light are both visible
- using repeated bursts of flash to expose the subject multiple times in the same image
What went well?
Even better if?

The settings that I used on the camera was a perfect timing. I would say all the settings worked well, but if I was to change somethings I would change the seconds to maybe about 15seconds to make the heart clearer. I would zoom in about, as 21mm is too zoomed out.
